Boronia Cottage proposed to be a small 48 place boutique long day care centre located in Boronia Avenue, Turramurra. Catering to children from 6 months of age up to 5 years old, the centre has been designed to emulate the environment of a home. The choice was to retain the existing cottage on site and to design a synonymous yet harmonious contemporary addition to the dwelling. The modern component of the proposal is ‘inserted’ into the undercroft space of the cottage and a wrap around veranda ties the two architectural typologies together. The facades are designed to sit within the natural environment with a playful pop of colour brightening up the exterior every now and then.
Nestled into the surrounding trees, the centre is located within a converted cottage that is complemented by its large leafy backyard, children will feel at home and comfortable growing and learning in this natural environment.
The owners ambition is to integrate the centre with the local community, developing a reciprocal relationship where both grow in concert together, enhancing the sense of belonging and security that already exists in this special part of the world.
The primary ground level outdoor play area of 299m2 is located on the northwest and western sides of the building and receives good solar access from late morning through to late afternoon. Most existing trees in this area will be retained and play and shade structures installed. A feature of the outdoor play area is its emphasis on providing a “natural” play environment by retaining most natural features. Landscaping and acoustic fencing will be provided along the southern rear boundary of the site.
The northeast portion of the site, fronting the building, will include construction of a car park accommodating 12 car spaces (including a disabled car space), with a two-way entry/exit driveway off Boronia Avenue. 5 car spaces are reserved for staff and 7 car spaces will be available for those dropping off and picking up children.
