This project was a large extension to a duplex within a heritage conservation area and has historic architectural elements which the owner wanted to retain through the extension of the home.
The house formally had a non descript granny flat / studio to the rear as well as a large dated covered deck. The existing kitchen, bathroom and laundry were tiny and the 2 bedrooms not sufficient for the family.
The loss of the granny flat and the external deck meant the gaining of a third bedroom internally, as well as a spacious kitchen living dining room space opening out onto a new covered deck and alfresco area.
A master bedroom suite was created to the side of the house using a blade wall to separate the living and bedroom wings.
Design cues were taken from the existing dwelling and recycled materials were employed throughout the external facade.
The new roofline is contemporary being a split skillion roof, however it marries into the existing roofline with no impact on the existing roofing.
The result was a contemporary interior and addition externally from the rear with the front heritage details left untouched. The new addition is not visible from the street therefore Not impacting the heritage controls of the conservation areas
